Monsieur Carme, the French champion billiard player, played a game, 800 up, on a French table, with Weston last night, giving the latter 400. Carme won easily. He made 93 successive cannons in one break. It is reported, says the Napier Telegraph that in the course of a fortnight, the plant for the establishment in Napier of another daily paper will arrive here. We have not heard who the enterprising journalists may be who are about to undertake the venture, nor do we know whether the new paper is to have a morning or an evening issue. There is not a bad opening for a good morning paper. The H. B. Herald of the 10th says : The contractors for the reclamation of the swamp, Messrs Anderson and Berry, yesterday, commenced operations, though, in' consideration of its being a holiday, the work was only of a formal nature, and was confined to turning the sod at the Oddfellows’ Hall reserve, which operation was performed by Mr Anderson and the manager to the contractors, Mr Thomas. To-day a number of men will be started on the work, We, (Napier Telegraph) hear from Wellington, that no less than 4000 bales of Hawke’s Bay grottn wool will be shipped at that port. What is the causa of this ? Is it from the excessive charges at Napier, or difference in freight and insurance ? There is nothing pleasing in the reflection that our chief trade is I leaving us ; if we cannot give freight to Kessels that discharge here, we shall very Lon have no direct importations. Is it ■ssible that we cannot compete with the perchants of Wellington.
