(From Exchanges) DUNEDIN. The English cricket team will reach Adelaide next month. Mr Levy, the great cornet player, is engaged, and will be here at the beginning of the year. Mr Emmett is abont to pay New Zealand a visit, and his agent, Mr Thatcher, proceeds to Dunedin by the next steamer. Only two legal opinions yet obtained by the Provincial Government re validity of convening the Council, &c., and their nature is kept a secret till others are received. The Provincial Estimates for three months have been forwarded to Wellington. The Autumn race programme is published including £5OO cup, and £2OO cup ; also two events, one of 150 sovs., and the other of 100 sovs. Bishop Moran proceeds to Auckland in a few days. WANGANUI. Mr Garland Woon, late of Auckland, and at present assistant clerk and interpreter to R.M. Court, is here, and it is rumoured has received the appointment of Sheriff of this district. A judge of the Native Lands Court on the East Coast having collided with the Native Land Purchase Department, and vice versa, an inquiry has been instituted, and Dr. Giles, R.M., and Major C. Brown go to-morrow to hold it. MELBOURNE. Captain Machel assaulted Captain Standish, Chief Commissioner of Police, in the breakfast-room of the Melbourne Club, with a riding whip, leaving some ugly marks. The affair, which arose over some simple dispute, has caused no little sensation in certain quarters. Captain Machel holds the position of Private Secretary to His Excellency the Governor. There is no alteration in the Cup betting. Irish Stew and Valentia are the best favorites, but Newmiuster is considered dangerous for both the Derby and Cup. Local is a good favorite for the Derby. WELLINGTON. Captain Morris has signified his intention of moving for a return of all the flour and sugar given as presents to the natives of the East Coast during the past five years.
