The Power of Figures. —A benevolent employer intending to gi> e a clever young man £lOOO for five years’ service, proposed to do so by beginning with a £lOO a year, and raising the clerk’s salary £5O per annum to the end of the term. Thus he proposed to give him £lOO, £l5O £2OO, £250, £3OO. The young man who was indeed wide awake for himself, if not for his-master, begged that the increase in his salary should be £25 every half year. Of course, this proposition was was readily accepted, for it was assumed that the final result would be the same. This arrangement, in fact, secured him ten payments, which were respectively £5O. £75, £lOO, £125, £l5O, £175, £2OO, £225, £250, £27s—total, £1625, instead of £lOOO. The power of figures is the secret of the money-lender’s art.
