The Gisborne Band.
Sir, —In Saturday’s paper in your notice of the late. concert, you suggest the the desirability of varying the vocal entertainment with wind and string music, you are quite right, it would break the monotony, and vocal music would, after instrumental, be listened to with fresh zest. It has often occurred to me to enquire what had become of the Gisborne Brass Band. I with many others, subscribed the amount necessary for the purchase of the instruments, on the understanding that they were to be regularly used in the service of the subscribers, by providing music at entertainments, and. also, playing in publie in some public place once or twice a month ; I have heard them play about twice. Now this sort of behaviour strikes me as not being calculated to further the ends of lovers of music. If the original promoters of the scheme found that the object for which subscribers paid their money could not be attained, they should have called a meeting of the subscribers and taken their opinion as to what should be done in the matter. I should be glad to see the scheme which I was asked to aid, carried out, or if not my money back in my pocket. Where are the instruments ? Is any one responsible for them ? Perhaps we could form a decent band, and request the present holders to hand them over.—l am, &c., The German Band.
