TELEGRAMS.

■ (from our own correspondent.) AUCKLAND. October 2. A man named Karie, late assistant on the Pretty Jane, attempted suicide lately by taking a dose of oxalic acid ; he has been committed for trial at the Supreme Court ; he expressed sorrow for what he had done, and says be had no intention to take away bis life. Sir George Arney is expected back in New Zealand soon, on account of his not getting good health in England. Milne and Choyce give a grand ball to the officers of the Nymph to-night ; it is expected to be a brilliant affair. It is proposed to give an ovation to Sir George Grey on his return from Wellington. Great complaints are made against the management of the Auckland railway; unpunctuality of arrival and departures, high charges, and incivility of the officers, form the principal charges ; a commission of investigation will sit here soon. The cattle fair was a great success ; 900 head were sold by Buckland in two hours, the prices realized being 25 per cent above ordinary quotations. A new illustrated paper is about to be started here by Featou and Begg, late of Gisborne ; the illustrations are to be lithographed. The productions for the first issue are in liana; Fanny Dynes was sentenced to-day to three months’ imprisonment, for concealment of birth.

NAPIER. October 3. There was a very full attendance at the Synod yesterday. , The Ven. Archdeacon Williams, in a feeling speech, nominated the Rev. Edward Craig Stuart,. of New South Wales, to the Bishopric of Waiapu, seconded by Mr. St. Hill, Clergy : ayes, 6, noes 12 ; Laity : ayes 4, uoes 9, the motion was therefore, lost. The Rev. E. Williams in a splendid speech, which was well received, nominated the Ven. Archdeacon Harper, seconded by Dr. Spenc. r, Clergy : ayes 17, noes 2, Laity : ayes 12, noes 1, the motion was accordingly carried. The feeling of the Synod was very much in the Archdeacon’s (Harper’s) favour. The Jane Douglas is not coming to Poverty Bay this week. Later, 3 p.m. Archdeacon Harper has declined, per telegram, to accept the nomination to the Bishopric of Waiapu.
