Cricket.—A match Town v. Country, is announced to take place at Makaraka on the day of the Agricultural Show. Seminary.—Mrs ■ Bonrke announces that the duties of the ensuing quarter will commence on Monday next, the 2nd October. Raffle.—A “ Speedy’s Patent ” Wool Press is announced to be raffled for at Saunder’s Shelbourne Hotel on Saturday next. Masonic. —The regular monthly meeting of the Tauranganni Lodge will be held in the Masonic Hall on Monday evening next the 2nd October. Furniture Sale.—Mr M. Hall will sell at the residence of G. F. Harris Esq. household furniture and effects on Friday next the 6th October. Auction Sale.—Mr M. Hall announces that he will sell a standing crop of 5j seres of green oats, at the Argyll Hotel, Gisborne, this evening, at 7 o’clock. Earthquake.—About six o’clock on Thursday evening last a prolonged shock of earthquake was felt in Gisborne. The direction indicated was East and West. Entertainment .at Makaubi. — The Rev. Mr Harper has requested us to state that another musical entertainment will take place at Mr King’s Mill at Makauri, on Tuesday evening next. Mounted Rifle Parade.—The Inspector’s half yearly parade took place on Thursday last. The attendance was small, 21 members only putting in an appearance. Captain and Adjutant Porter was on the field, and expressed himself satisfied with the appearance of the force. Christmas Race Meeting.—The time for sending in entries for the Nursery Stakes, to he run forat the ensuing Races under the auspices of the Waerenga-a-hika Race Club is extended to the 15th, November next. Vide announcement to that effect in this morning's issue.
Divine Services, To-morrow, Sunday.—Church of England—Services will be conducted at Holy Trinity Church as usual, morning and evening. Wesleyan— The Rev. W. S. Harper. Gisborne, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., Makauri, 2.30 p.m. Presbyterian—The Rev. W. H. RootSt. Andrew’s, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., Matawhero, 2.30 p.m. Debating Society.—There was not a large attendance at the fortnightly 7 meeting on Tuesday evening last, although the course provided was of an entertaining character, and those present enjoyed a pleasant evening in recitations and readings. The subject for discussion at the next meeting is “ Will the cultivation of cereal and root crops on the flat lands of Poverty Bay, pay better than pastoral pursuits.” ' Forresters’ Court. —A meeting is announced to take place in the Court House, Gisborne, on Wednesday Evening next, to make arrangements for opening a Court of Foresters in Gisborne. There are we learn, about a dozen members of different Courts here, and nearly as many more have signified their intention to join in the new formation.
