Sib.—l notice in the papers that all kinds of pains and penalties are in store for those who refuse to pay the Education Eate this year. As the fatherofa family who is anxious tohave his children educated, these threats would not alarm me supposing there was a school in the district to which I could send my youngsters, our school has been closed a long time by order of Central Board and no provision made to give us a quid-pro-quo, for the payments of the tax, no sign has been made by the local committee or any one up to the present, in the meantime our children are running wild for the want of school discipline besides forgetting what they have already learned. The season for regular attendance is at hand for those living s! a distance, and I am informed that it is probable the school will not be opened before Christmas. Is this right? Shall 1 not

have very excellent grounds for the non payment of any rate when called upon by the collector ? I shall most certainly refuse, and hold myself in readiness to appear before Mr Lusk in Auckland to express my indignation and take my educational term in.
