POVERTY BAY AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL SOCIETY.

The first annual meeting of this Society was held yesterday, at Mr Steggall's Hotel, Makaraka. Over 40 settlers attende’d. The Chairman, Mr Poynter, explained that the purpose of the meeting were the laying before the members the financial statement for the past year, and making arrangements for the coming one. The accounts shewed a debit balance of £1 4s Id. After a lengthy discussion, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Hall, seconded by Mr Parsons, that the next Show be held at Makaraka. It was also determined on the motion of Mr Parsons, seconded by Mr Hall, “ That the Show should take place in the first week in October.” Several propositions of dates in November, January, and March, were negatived in favor of the foregoing. A proposition by Mr Walsh that a supplementary Show for the exhibition of farm produce and agricultural implements be held in March next, did not meet with any support. Mr Walsh complained strongly, that the whole interest of the Society appeared to centre in. sheep and cattle; and that the most convenient time for meeting, and other arrangements, were made subservient to those interests, altogether ignoring agriculture to which they (the sheep and cattle) were really secondary. The following gentlemen were elected as a Committee for the ensuing year : — Messrs. McKenzie, Harris, Poynter, Parsons, Caulton, Cameron, and Breingan.
