ELECTIONEERING TACTICS.
Sib,—l cannot express my surprise at the turn matters have taken, culminating in the retiring of Mr. Wilson and the coming to the front of G. E. Bead. It strongly reminds me of a little sketch in Punch called “ Lucid explanation ” in which one old party explains to the other “ you see at first he was all fjghim, aud then he turned round and run slap agin himand this is indeed running agin him with a vengeance. But what were the Committee about? Why did they request Wilson to retire in Read 's favor ? Do they think Read has a better chance of election, or is he a cleverer, or an honaster man ? Or a more.straightforward or reliable man ? Or is it, as I have heard, that if we bring Read forward the Government will give us many polling places; and if we bring forward a man who is not pledged to the existing Government we shall have cold water thrown on us at every step ? Sir, I should like to ask you this, is’nt a man who goes in to support any particular Ministry an ass? How can he know what measures, disadvantageous to his constituency, they may not bring forward ? I have heard an old saying, “ measures not men.” This seems now reversed into “ men not measures.” Shall we disfranchise ourselves by subscribing to this doctrine, and electing an expediency member. I say No. Gisborne, December 24.1875.
