PORT OF POVERTY BAY THE ACCIDENT TO THE PRETTY JAKE. This accident did not, we learn since, result from any injury sustained by the touching of the keel of the steamer on the bar, whilst going out of the river on Tuesday morning, but from the pressure brought upon the engines off Table Cape, when the vessel had to encounter a strong breeze of head wind, which caused the engines to race considerably—hence the carrying away of the propeller. Had, however, t here been a spare propeller on board or at Gisborne, the accident would have caused little detention to the steamer; but as the A.S.P. Company do not choose to make any provision for such contingencies, they must, of course, put up with the loss consequent thereon. It is strange that aft er so many mishaps the Company should still remain so indifferent to their own interests as they apparently do. This accident will probably entail a lose of £2OO upon them ; but had they the foresight—as they ought to have—to provide a spare propeller it would not cost them £3O- - Curry received instructions to proceed to Auckland to get the damage repaired, and thia voyage, we think, might hare been obviated by the necessary repairs being done here. A propeller could have been easily shipped at A uckland by the Rosina, which left there on Thursday afternoon last, and which ie expected here to-day. In the present crippled state of the Jane, her passage to Auckland may, from contrary winds, be materially delayed, and thus unnecessary expenses will be incurred where they could be avoided.
