PARLIAMENTARY. (from oub own cobbesfondbnt.) WELLINGTON. ” October 11. The Maori Representation Bill has been thrown out by 20 to 17. The Native Minister, -while opposing the Bill, expressed himself as favorable to the Maoris having another member. The Redistribution of Representation Bill was read a second time. Mr. Kelly gave notice of motion of amendment to create a new electoral district, to be called the Southern East Coast, including Hawke’s Bay up to the town of Napier. Mr. Bryce is going to move for second member for Wanganui. Mr. Pyke for fourth one for Dunedin. Sir George Grey moved that the Land Purchase Agents of the colony should not be allowed to purchase lands for private persons or for themselves; that all lands so purchased by those officers should be deemed part of the Colonial estate; and that the present owners be refunded the cost, , i
Sir Donald McLean agreed with the first part of the motion, but the second part amounted to confiscation; he announced that the Government did not intend to make any more native land purchases for some time ; also that only half of the £700,000 voted for that purpose had been expended. The Government opposed Sir George Grey’s resolution, but promised to stop further trafficing by agents ; the motion was lost by 36 to 22. The Legislative Council passed the Abolition Bill without any amendment. Sir John Richardson said he was an advocate for each Island being a separate province, with a Federal Government at Wellington. NAPIER. A meeting of ship owners determined to erect a slip for repairing vessels up to 60 tons. Two thirds of the required capital was subscribed at the meeting. For the Agricultural Show next Thursday, over 200 entries have been made; the day will lb a public holiday.
