GENTLEMEN,— In retiring from the Editorship of this Journal I think a few words may fairiy be expected from the in explanation. I need not assure you that I take this step deliberately, and with mhch regret. Few of you are practically acquainted with the great strain the work of journalism imposes upon the mental and physical, energies; but most of you are aware that for the past three years I have labored hard to bring the Standard to its present condition at a great sacrifice of personal comfort, and "to the detriment of my health. Success in life is dearly bought, if it be purchased at the expense of bodily Buffering ; and it is because I feel the ill effects of a continued, laborious application to business generally, that lam compelled to confine my attention in future to that pertion of it which will give me a more active occupation. I feel, however, 'that my energies have not been thrown away, as I am convinced they have not been uselessly employed ; and it gives me great satisfaction to know that my place, in the literary department, will be filled by one 1 in every way able to cope successfully with the work before him. l am, Gentlemen, Your most Obedient Servant, H. E. WEBB.
