AGRICULTURAL and PASTORAL SOCIETY.
A large gathering of stock owners and farmers took place at the Makaraka Hotel on Tuesday last, for the purpose of forming an Agricultural and Pastoral Society in this district; and we are glad to say that the mostmarkedcordialityand interest were evidenced by all present. Long and animated discussions took place relative to the best means to be adopted to ensure success to the undertaking, during which the following resolutions were carried:— Mr. S. Parsons having been voted to the chair, Mr. Poynter : “ That an Agricultural and Pastoral Society be formed, and a committee appointed to draw up rules for a show.” Mr. Meldrum : “ That the committee consist of seven members,” upon which Messrs. Parsons, Smith, P. Breingan, Hall, Meldrum, Tutchen, and Poynter were elected. Mr. Poynter was elected President, Mr. Parsons Vice-President, Mr. Dufaur, Secretary and Treasurer. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Kempthorne that the show be held the first week in October next. It was resolved that the meeting be adjourned to Wednesday the Bth September to consider rules for the Society, and other business. A resolution was carried, after the expression of much adverse opinion, that the first of the Society’s shows is to take place at Makaraka, the chairman giving his casting vote as against the show being held at Waerenga-a-hika, proposed an amendment.
Members’ subscriptions were fixed at £1 Is each per annum. Some thirty settlers subscribed their names as members, and the meeting terminated with the usual compliment.
