THE TIMBER CONTRACT WITH THE ENGLISH GOVERNMENT.
It now appears, says the Auckland Ntflsr that the timber contract which Mr. Thomas Russell has concluded with the English Admiralty is not on behalf of himself alone, but has been signed by him in conjunction with Messrs Stone Brothers and Mr. W. C. Wilson. The amount to be supplied annually does not reach within a million feet of the stated quantity. Messrs. Stone Brothers have just succeeded in chartering the fine ship Director, 800 tons, now in Newcastle to take the first shipment home. By the barque Loehnagar, which arrived from Newcastle to-day, we learn that it is likely the Director will load straight to Auckland coals, and will then go round Xo ftie, Wairoa (Kaipara) to load, at Mr. Dargaville’s wharf. She rwas to leave Newcastle about the 26th inst. The i Director will speedily be followed by other vessels, which are now being negotiated for. Captain Kelly, of the Lochnagar, describes the Director as a fine British-American built vessel, nearly new. Captain Shamper is in command.
