POET OF POVERTY BAY We much regret having to record an accident that happened to the Lily, launch, on Tuesday night last whilst employed towing in the schooner Effie Meikle, by which means her funnel was carried away, and the boat for the time was in imminent danger. Other parts of her machinery were also more or less injured, the repairs of which will necessitate a further debit to profit and loss account in time and money. The Lily had just under* gone repairs which cost about £250, and the misfortune tells heavily on the owners and shipping interests of the port. Captain Chrisp reports only sft. lOin. on the bar on Thursday last, and, in consequence, tlie Effie Meikle could not proceed to sea. It is doubtful if the Jane can come in when she arrives, and may, probably, go on to Napier with the Gisborne cargo, unless lightering can be effectively managed. The Effie Meikle got safely over the bar yesterday bound for Napier. A private telegram from Auckland yesterday informs us that the Pretty Jane put back for shelter under the Mercury Islands. This information whs probably conveyed to Auckland by the Rowena, due from Tauranga on Thursday. As the wind veered to the west•ward early yesterday morning, the Jane may bo looked for in the course of this afternoon.
