St. Andrew’s Church, Gisborne, morning, 11 o’clock, evening 6.30. Nbw Member.—A petition is in course of signature, to be presented to Parliament, praying that in the re-distribution of seats the new Representation Bill will provide for the partition of the East Coast Electoral district, so as to give a member to Poverty Bay. The petition will, doubtless, be signed by every adult settler in the Bay.
Band or Hofe.—A meeting of youngsters took place in the Gisborne School-house on Thursday evening last, at the instigation of Mr Robbins, who, to say the worst of him, is an enthusiast iu the promotion and advocacy of Band of Hope and kindred institutions. A goodly number were enrolled after the meeting had been addressed by several speakers on the advantages to be derived from this class of entertainment.
East Coast Mail Skbvice.—Our Waiapu correspondent informs us that efforts are being mode, by petition to the Government, to obtain an increase of pay for Waterhouse—more familiarly known as Jim—who has been carrying the overland mail between Gisborne and Waiapu for some years past. As this is but mere justice to a most worthy and persevering man, we trust the Government will be influenced by an expression of the good wishes of the settlers in the direction indicated.
Professor Bruce.—Professor Bruce gave two of his Phrenological lectures and Mesmeric seances, in the Masonic Hall, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, to very fair audiences, and with average success. After the introductory portion of the lecture the Professor proceeded to examine the craniums of several well-known residents in the town, whose proclivities and proverbial characteristics were depicted with an accuracy and candour that told greatly in favor of the operator, and gave evidence of an intimate knowledge of the subject in hand. The illustrations wore interspersed with apt allusions—sometimes to better, sometimes to worse men—-as affording proof of the reliableness of phrenology as a science ; and accompanied with some quaint anecdote and appropriately selected witticism, told in Professor Bruce’s happiest Hibernian brogue—all of which caused great amusement. Some very queer things were also subsequently done with other subjects while under the Professor’s influence; one would be placed in a chair from which he could not extricate himself; another, having the chair in his hands behind him could not place it on the ground ; a third was ■ made to aim sundry blows at the Professor's extended arm, which he could not succeed in hitting, while a fourth was placed to shave —with his cap taken for a razor—the beard from a venerable looking head painted on the proscenium, to the intense delight, of his stage friend, who was made by the Professor to laugh prodigiously at his folly. There were many other tricks performed, all more or less wonderful and amusing in their way, and added much to the variety of the entertainment. Professor Bruce performs to-night at Ormond, and tnose who wish for an agreeable and instructive pastime will do well to pay him a visit.
