POVERTY BAY DISTRICT HIGHWAY BOARD.
The first meeting of the new Board was held ii) the Court House Buildings on Monday last. The following letters were received : —■ Brom Captain Porter enclosing opinion of Provincial Secretary advising that the Highways Act does not debar Government officers from voting. From several business people complaining of the present management of the Gisborne wharf, and from Messrs Graham & Co., recommending that the foreshore be submitted to auction. From the Under Secretary of Public Works stating that the claim of tho Board for money spent on General Government roads in settled districts cannot be recognized. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr. A. Bucharian that I he proximo given by him to be exercised by Mr. Skillicorn at the late election was refected in error by the scrutineers. The Board recommended that a license be granted to Toki Wite Kaira for a ferry at Pakiukiri. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr. Hamon that the Board cannot entertain his claim for compensation for alteration of goad through his sections 59 and 60 in the Ormond settlement.
Mr. T. M. Bryant was elected Secretary to the Board at a sallary of £5O per annum. The Secretary was instructed to ascertain from Mr. Ferris and Mr. Lambert, at what rate they are prepared to assess properties in the Highway District for the current year. Also from Mr. Piesse as to the terms he requires for the collection of rates. Several accounts were passed.
