SONG OF THE EVENING BREEZE,

A lonely maid in evening’s gloom Stroll’d sadly to her bow’r ; She heeded not the sweet perfume That spread from many a flow’r, Bat whisper’d to the gentle breeze—- “ Oh ! tell me, tell me pray, Ye whose light wings sweep many seas, Where roams my love away. Where, where, ye soft winds say.” Then sighed the zephyr ’mong the leaves As if in sympathy—- “ Dispel the doubts thy mind conceives He’s ever true to t hee; In distant climes his valiant blade Adds glory to his name, Nor doubt, nor weep, nor be afraid, He carves his way to fame And loves thee still the same. “ And when with honours, wealth and fame He homeward bends his way, Belov’d and sought by ev’ry dame, His love from thee'll not stray : The swiftest bark that cleaves the main, The steed of fleetest stride— He’ll urge until he comes again, Ne’er more to leave thy side, And claim thee as his bride.” F.J.P. Gisborne, N.Z., June 1875, [The indulgent reader i*f requested to imagine this Song of the'Evening Breeze to be in reply to an absent Crusader’s Lady Love.]
