Daly’s Cross.—The fifth competition for the honor of holding the Cross presented to the Gisborne Rifle Volunteers by Lieut. Daly takes place at the Gisborne butts on Saturday, the 12th June next. Licensing Court. — We would remind those interested t hat the quarterly licensing commissioners will hold a court on Tuesday next, the Ist June, in the Court House Gisborne. School Meeting—The meeting advertised for Wednesday evening last, at Matawhero has been postponed, on account of the severity of the weather on that day, to to-morrow afternoon at 4 o’clock, in the Church. Trinity Church.—We have been requested to state that, in consequence of the non-arrival of the southern steamer, the Rev. Mr. Williams’ departure has been postponed, and that the Rev. gentleman will conduct Divine Service at Holy Trinity Church to-morrow morning and evening. Church Services. Sunday 30th May. —The Rev. W. H. Root, at St. Andrew’s Church, morning 11 evening 6.30 and at Matawhero at 2.30 p.m. The Rev. Mr. Carr, at the Court-house, Gisborne, morning 11 evening 6 30. The Rev. E. Williams, Trinity Church, morning 11 evening 7 o’clock. Petroleum Company.— Operations are now. we learn, at a standstill at the Company’s works. Mr. Pai sons has reached some considerable depth in the third shaft, with the boring rods, but having arrived at the sandstone formation, it is found necessary to commence drilling, to acheive which the engine must be removed from its present position at the top of the hill, a labour of anything but love at this time of the year. A new derrick will also have to be erected.
