Important from Wairoa. Threatening Attitude of the Uriwera Natives. Rumour of Two Fighting Pas Building. NAPIER. » May 25. The Telegraph's Wairoa correspondent says it is reported that the Uriwera natives are building a fighting pa on the South side of the Waikaremoanalake, also another at Ruatahuna. It appears that the Uriwera are very excited and dissatisfied with the coast tribes for selling lands over which they (the Uriweras) have claims, and complain of settlement along the inland road to Poverty Bay having extended beyond the military post. The settlers are about petitioning the Government for the establishment of another Constabulary station. CHRISTCHURCH. May 21. Frederick Pavitt, late steward of the Church Property Estate, was brought up again, on remand, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, charged with embezzling £l6OO from Christ’s College fund. The case was fully proved, and no defence offered. Prisoner was committed on all the charges brought against him. His total defalcations amount to £5733, but there are other accounts which may not come before the Court, bringing the total up to £6BOO
