Masonic—The usual monthly meeting of the craft will be held in the Masonic Hall on Monday evening next at 8 o'clock. Quadrille Assembly.—Mr. Dugleaux intimates that the first of the winter series of the Quadrille Assembly will be held in the Music Hall, Gisborne, on Tuesday evening the Ist June. Queen’s Birthday Ball.—Mr.Dugleaux, is, we see, catering for the amusement and comfort of loyal Terpsichoreans on the 24th A ball being announced to take place in the Music Hall Gisborne, on Monday night, Mr. T. VV. Best desires us to draw attention to his choice selection of seasonable winter goods now opening in his new premises in the Gladstone Road. Ladies who are fond of “ novelties,” will surely find them in Mr Best’s reserchee selection. Church Services, to-morrow, will be he’d as under : The Rev. Mr. Williams, Trinity Church, morning at 11 o’clock, evening at 7The Rev. Mr. Root, St. Andrew’s, morningut 11 o’clock, evening 6.30. Matawhero, at 230 p.m. The Rev: Mr. Carr, at the Court House, , morning at 11 o'clock, evening 6.30p.m.

Mr. Bedford Sheriff, we are glad to learn, has been successfully treated in Wellington, whither he proceeded a fortnight since in search of medical advice. We are glad to welcome him home again, and in a fair way of recovery. Does it not seem to be a pity that a practice like that offered by Poverty Bay should go a begging, and that an exodus of patients should take place, in order to find medical relief in other towns? Freemasons’ Hall Company.—We learn that arrangements have been completed by which the members of the Lodge of Freemasons in Poverty Bay have formed themselves into a company for the purchase of the Music Hall in Gisborne from Captain Porter, the present proprietor, for the purpose of a Lodge Hall. The price to be paid is in the neighbourhood of £lOOO to be raised in 200 shares of £5 each. This sale will not alterthe existing arrangements, as the building will be let as usual for all purposes of public requirement. Ormond Bazaab and Concert. —We would remind our readers that the bazaar ami concert, in aid of the Ormond school building fund, will take place at Ormond on Monday next, when the choice attractions that wiil be offered should draw a large number of visitors thither. The bazaar will be open all the afternoon ; a concert will be held in the evening, at which Captain Gudgeon has consented to take the chair; and aft er which there will bo a danee. These should suffice to please the most fastidious. Inquest.—An inquest was held on Wednesday last on the remains of Charles Claridge, at the Royal Hotel, Gisborne, when a verdict of accidental death was recorded. The funeral took place the same afternoon, and was attended by a firing party selected from the Mounted Rifle Volunteers, of which corps deceased was a member. In the absence of u curator of Intestate estates, we learn that Mr. Hall has consented to act ns amicus curia, and has taken charge of affairs pending advices from deceased’s brother at Wanganui, with whom telegraphic communication has already been opened on the matter. Lucky Tauranga.—The Bay of Plenty Times does not think Tauranga is lucky in having a promise of £55 from Colonial funds to dig a well with, and that the town is to be supplied with a clock at the expense of the colony. Well, we repeat that we do think it a stroke of good luck, and what is more, that Sir Donald M’Lean ought to be accountable fortrifling with the public funds on matters that are so purely loeal that to ask the aid of the Government to prosecute them tends to bring the settlers of that township into ridicule. We don’t think the people of Poverty Bay will ask the Government to dig them a well, if they fail to get water when the £2OO just raised is spent. Oh Temporesl O Tauranga I Where is now thy patriotism ? Gisborne Chubcu Cure. — The Rev. Edward Williams was a passenger by the Rangatira from the south on. Thursday last. We learn that the rev. gentleman’s mission to Poverty Bay is to ascertain the probablities of his induction to the vacancy existing in the Episcopal Church here, and that he will conduct Divine Service at Trinity Church to-inorrow both morning and evening. Report speaks very highly of Mr. Williams’ clerical attainments, both as a Minister of the Gospel, and as an exponent of Christian example; and from the testimonials which we have been permitted to peruse, we cannot but think that every nerve should be strained to secure the permanent residence amongst us of one so eminently calculated to promote the best interests of the people committed to his charge. Vestry and Parish meetings will be held to discuss the question of ways and means, in the course of a few days.
