Auckland, May 13. The s s. City of Melbourne has arrived from Sydney. She brings the following cable news:— LONDON.
May 4. The Chester Cup was won by Freeman. The Pope is suffering from weakness. The May wool sales have opened, the quantity catalogued being 264,1)00 bales. Upwards of 6000 hales were offered. The attendance was large and the co.upetition brisk, the prices ranging about the same as those of last series. The second series will terminate on the 19th June, and the third series will commence on the 17th August. The fifth series has been abandoned. MELBOURNE. May 7. A public meeting resolved in favor of a progressive land tax. Lurline proceeds to Adelaide to run for the Cup. The Melbourne conference of local bodies condemned the abolition of tolls. Governor Bowen and family will return to the colony in September. His Excellency received great attention from Victor Emmanuel and the Royal Family in Italy, in return for the reception of the Duke of Genoa in Australia. Bishop Jenner, the rejected- Bishop of Dunedin, is to go to Colombo, exchanging his parish at home with Bishop Jermyn. He promises, however, to be moderate, but this arrangement is likely to hasten on the disestablishment of the English Church. Mr. Pope Hennessy is appointed Governor of the Windward Islands. Mr. Gladstone has replied to the critics in another pamphlet, entitled “ Vaticanism.” War with Burrnah is imminent. Colonel Brome’s party, intending to travel through China from Burrnah, had scarcely started when they were driven back by the Chinese Governor of Minnen, and Colonel Broine was treacherously murdered. Moody and Sankey have commenced special services in London. Twenty thousand assembled every evening in the Agricultural Hall, which was crowded, and there had been midday meetings in Exeter Hall.
