Bank Holiday.—The bunks in Gisborne will be closed on Monday next, the anniversary of Her Majesty’s birthday. Masonic.—The regular monthly meeting of the Turanganui Lodge, will take place in the Masonic Hall on Monday evening next at 8 o’clock. Dissolution.—Notice is given to-day’that the partnership of Messrs Johnson Bros, and Westrup has been dissolved. Accounts arete be rendered and paid by the 31st May, inst. Our Member.—Mr. Woodbine Johnson was a passenger by the Go-a-head to Auckland on Sunday morning last, to attend the Provincial Council now in Session. .He was the bearer of a petition from Mr. Siddons to the Council, praying for redress on account of losses sustained through Mr. Lusk’s irregularities. We understand it is quite probable that Mr. Johnson will proceed direct to England on a visit, when the Council breaks up.

Building Society.—At the usual fortnightly meeting of this society on Monday evening last, it was resolved by the directors to recommend to the trustees that the operations of the society be increased, by bringing into operation the rules which give power to borrow money to meet increased demands of members. We are glad to find that, this society is growing in popular favor, and that the benefits arising from its usefulness are appreciated. Messrs Boylan and Townley were elected Trustees in the room of Messrs Porter and Morgan who retired, the letter accident which occurred to Mr. C. Claridge yesterday evening in the Gladstone-road. It appears that while in the act of alighting from his dray he tripped, and fell in such a manner as to be unable to clear himself from the wheel which wentover his body in adiagonal direction crushing him very severely. Dr. Nesbitt was speedily in attendance, and the sufferer removed to-Mr. Hird’s residence. It is impossible to say whttt injuries have been sustained. Since writing the above we regret to hear that death has supervened. Mr. Claridge was an old Napier settler, and universally respected for his genial inoffensive mode of life. Bay of Plenty Hand Book.—We have great pleasure in acknowledging the receipt of an interesting brochure, recently issued from the Bay of Plenty Times office at. Tauranga. by Messrs. Langbridge & Edgcumbe, the spirited proprietors of that journal. Patriotism is a quality of conduct described as being actuated by a love of one’s country. A patriot must, therefore, be he who serves his country, with a disinterested motive, and whose love for it moves him to do that which is removed from mercenary motives and likely to benefit his fellow creatures. It is but natural, as it is but just, that the promoters of the Buy of Plenty Hand Book should hope to reap whatever reward there may be yet to be gleaned from the prosperity of the country which they, at no little personal expense, have endeavoured to promote ; still the thanks of the settlers, and intending tourists to that most interesting part of this most interesting country, are due to them for the complete and useful guide, to the hot lake district, just issued by them. The descriptions are accurate without being verbose, and cannot fail to be of immense advantage to visitors and others, contemplating a sojourn there. The book is issued gratis.

Charles King, late Sergeant A.C. Force, has, we understand, commenced an action for damages against Messrs Tunks, Bluett, and Edgcumbe, for false imprisonment. Damages are stated at £550. — Bay of Plenty Times
