Judge Rogan and Mr. Woon left on Thursday last in the Advance fpr Awanui, to be in readiness for th e sitting of the Native Lands Court, at Waipiro on Monday next. Donation.—The Committee of the Gisborne Benevolent Society, acknowledge, with thanks, the receipt of a donation of £2 2s from the “ Pioneer” Lodge of Good Templar*. Church Services, tomorrow will be held a* under: —ln Trinity Church, evening at 7 o’clock p.m, at St. Andrew’s Church, Gisborne, morning at 11 o’clock, evening at 6.30, Matawhero, at. 2.30 p.m. Poverty Bay Club.—A meeting of members will be held this evening in the Club-room Albion Hotel at 8 o’clock; to ballot for members, and transact other business. A meeting of Roman Catholics will take place to-morrow afternoon at 3 o’clock in the Gisborne School-house, for the purpose of forming a branch of the Hibernian Catholic Benefit Society. The Waikanae Tenders for bridge are all too high. A modification is to be made so as to bring the cost of its construction down to the sum originally contemplated, £7O. The highest tender was £145 and the lowest £lO7 10s, a difference of nearly 25 per cent. Artesian Well.—Mr. Garry having commenced active operations, at Mr. Higgins’ Artesian Well, Makaraka, subscribers to the “ sinking ” fund, are requested to redeem their promises. We understand that Mr. Garry has seen nothing as yet to make him doubtful of ultimate success ; of this, however, we may be certain, that if water is to be had, Mr. Garry is the man to find it. I.O.G.T.—We are requested to state that the members of the “ Pioneer” Lodge of Good Templars, have passed a special vote of thanks to Mrs. Berry who presided at the piano on the occasion of their recent anniversary ; and also to Mr. Maefarlane and sons, for their musical assistance. We do this with the more pleasure, as our apologies are due to Mrs. Berry for an unhappy neglect in omitting special mention of her kindness in our hastilywritteni notice of the entertainment. that the Directors have decided to curtail their expenditure, in the face of the difficult ies by which they are encompassed. The manager (Mr. Parsons) is to be allowanced on £2OO a year, and board while engaged at the works, which may cost about another £25 a year, — such engagement being understood to be temporary only—terminable, on either side at a month’s notice. All other expenses are on a like basis. Boring is now going on at the bottom of the third shaft, some considerable depth having been attained, with what are said to be, good indications. We must still confess that it seems inexplicable why boring does wot precede shaft sinking. Sheep Inspector.—Mr. Meldrum returned from an official tour on the East. Coast, Northwards, on Thursday last. We are glad to learn from that gentleman that he has no scab now existing in his district. Messrs. Reeves, Robson, and Murphy are the only flockowners having had occasion to dip, and the latter holds a clean certificate given to him by the Inspector. It is a matter for congratulat ion that this pest has been so satisfactorily over-come. 8o Jsoon as Captain Porter concludes negotiations now pending with the natives for the purchase of their sheep, the whole district of Poverty Bay will be free of this dreadful scourge. 1.0.0. F.—A special general meeeting of members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, will be held in the Lodge Room, Masonic Hotel, on Monday evening next at 8 o’clock for the purpose of taking steps towards building a Lodge Room. The rapid progress that this, and kindred institutions, are making in this district, shows a wonderful power and elasticity in the energy of its settlers. We believe the Gisborne Lodge numbers some 50 members, the good offices of whose combined labors are sure to be appreciated in times of sickness and distress.
