OUR ENTERPRISING PREMIER.

The Brisbane Courier in recently commenting upon the enterprise displayed by the Premier of New Zealand :— “ Now and then we find a man like our gallant visitor, M. Blondin, who can walk high ropes without faltering, possessing, as he must-, a cool head and lots of nerve. We look on and wonder, applauding to the top of our bent, but we cannot hope to be Blondins any more than we can all hope to be Vogels. They are both of them wonderful men in their different ways. Mr. Vogel steps along his rope with as fine a confidence and grace as M. Blondin, and we, of course, never hope to see the one or the other break his neck. But the element of danger is there, no doubt, in both cases. Still, with New Zealand and Mr. Vogel it must be admitted that to some extent he has been obliged to walk boldly on a rope more than usually high. Enterprise of the high rope kind has almost been a necessity for him. If there had not been something of that kind to keep people employed, [there must have been another miserable Maori melee. Emigrants, railways, and even South Sea Companies are infinitely preferable to storming native pahs and importing soldiers to get knocked over in the fern. Mr. Vogel really deserves the intelligent sympathy of all who are watching him in his perilous aseent. It is only to be hoped that he will keep on the safe side of his past achievements.”
