ONE MORE FIRE.
Poverty Bay’ will soon become to be looked upon either with sympathy or suspicion, on account of the number of houses that have been burnt down lately. On Wednesday night last Mr. W. S. Greene’s homestead, at Kaiariki was completely destroyed by fire through the burning of which the inmates narrowly escaped destruction. Mr. Greene was in Gisborne at the time, and was aroused by a messenger bringing him the startling news at 2 o’clock in the morning. There seems to be no other clue to the cause than that embers from the kitchen stove had fallen on to the floor, which, as in the case of Mullooly’s, was unprotected. Mrs. Greene was alone in the house with her younger children only, and little or nothing was saved. Although insured in the Victoria for sEGOO, Mr. Greene is a loser of something like £2OO.
