SCHOOL MEETING, MATAWHERO.

A meeting was held at the Matawhero Church on the 4th inst. to consider the appointment of a schoolmaster. Mr. Parsons was voted to the chair, and informed the meeting that the Rev. W. H. Root had placed the church at the disposal of the settlers for a schoolroom, he also introduced Mr. Cullinan the applicant for the situation who produced testimonials from Dr. Wood of Auckland and Mr. Robert Lee Inspector of schools, Wellington. The meeting decided to appoint Mr. Cullinan to carry on the school until taken in hand by the Board of Education. After reading over the clauses in the Education Act bearing on the subject it was proposed and carried that a committee consisting of Messrs Roe an-.l Parker, and the chairman be appointed to draw up a memorial to the board as required by the 17th clause of the Education Act, to obtain signatures and forward the same. It was proposed that the district should comprise a radius of three miles from the Matawhero church. It was decided that until assistance should be received from the Board a fee of Is per week in advance be charged for each child, no family to pay for more than two children. The master was guaranteed a salary of 30s a week, should the fees not amount to that sum, private subscriptions to be solicited. The school hours to be from 10 to 4 o’clock p.m. the master to commence duty on Monday Bth March.
