We learn that Messrs Boylan Brothers have purchased *.he schooner Opotiki, and th»:t the Advance has passed into the hands of Captain Kennedy, we wish the spirited owners success in their enterprise. It gives us great pleasure to announce the safe arrival of the Pretty Jane steamer once more at her old anchorage in the Bay ; and we Like this opportunity of congratulating Mr. Lodder, and all who hive so successfully grappled with tliis difficult task It will be remembered that an inspection survey of the vessel was held some time since by three nautical men—Messrs. Harris. Gibbons, and Shearer—who gave their opinion before a Notary Public that the vessel was “ hogged,” ami should be abandoned as a wreck. This decision was not accepted, at any .rate not acted on, for on the 22nd ultimo, Mr. Lodder, acting under instructions from the A.S.P. Company, commenced the task of literally digging the steamer out of the sand, as well as emptying her hold of the many tons of sea drift which bad accumulated there About 40 in ail including 21 natives, ship’s officer?, and crew, have labored incessantly, until at length they were enabled to cut the anchor from her side, and temporarily plate over the hole so as to al’ow her to Hout. On Wednesday last the Southern Cross steamed to the Big River, and aft>-ra duy and night’s hard toil succeeded in bringing over the Pretty Jane on Thursday. Mr. Lodder’s original estimate of £1,500 as being required to put her in sea-going i-rim, is about correct; this, however, is distinct from the cost of the new machinery, some £6OO, with which she is to be lilted on her arrival in Auckland. Her bottom is found to be started some five inches, but she is not “ hogged ” as has been asserted. Mr. Lodder—who is evidently a shrewd, practical man of business —calculates that her new machinery will give the Jane an additional speed of nearly a knot an hour, with a saving of aixxit 42 per cent, of coal; •he will have increased passenger accomodation, and will be in every re«?>ect a better boat than formerly Her present machinery is still sound, and she will steam for Auckland in the course of next week. Taking all things into consideration great credit is due to Mr. LxKtder, Captain Fernandez, and Captain Palmer for their successful and prompt recovery of the wreck. A good start, the result of which will be looked for with some interest, was effected between the steamers Southern Cross and Rangatira on Thursday evening on their way to Napier. They both left their anchorages together, and would, doubtless, pile up strong during the night. The 'Frisco January mail had not arrived in Auckland when the Southern Cross left. It will probably come to hand by the Go-a-head to-day. The Southern Cross will call in at this port on the way upto Auckland to-morrow. CHBiSTCHURcn, March 2. The usual route of the steamer Easby has changed. She leaves here to-morrow for Napier direct, with 2000 sheep, 500 bushels of oats, and the same quantity of giass seed. Her owner, Mr. Fulton, is on board. From Napier the Easby goes to Wellington, and from .there to Sydney. Auckland. On the last passage of the Southern Cross from Napier a birth occurred. The female passengers gr.atly’coinplain of there being no stewardess to attend to them. Bluff, March 2. The s.s. Otago left Melbourne on the 24th February, and arrived at the Bluff on March 2. She brings 33 saloon and 40 steerage passengers, and 400 tons cargo for all ports.
