TO PET. A wonx and restless heart lay there, Weary and dull with sorrow and care, As ever gaz’d up in the starlight clear With a prayer for the light of day. The far away stars their twinkling light Might join with the beams of the queen of night, They seemed but to bring to his aching sight Scenes gone and pass’d away. The sorrows and joys of childhood’s years, With its lights and shadows, its hopes aud fears ; A mother’s love, and a mother’s tears, Lest her love might be in vain. The lore he had sought once more stood by ; True as the day when, toving and shy, She bade him unsay those words “ Good bye,” Nor leave her e’er again. When the fire of love in his heart was fann’d By each tone of her voice—each touch of her hand, And tender and true his heart as he plann’d To win his love—his queen. But the night winds round him seem’d tomoan, « Those days are gone, and the love that shone To licht thy path is for ever flown, The past is but a dream.” Susb s L B.
