Pbivatb letters from Auckland mention a rumor current there, to the effect that Sir George Grey has for some time been in communication with Dr. Featherston, and that if the former stands for Auckland City West, the latter will probably throw up the Agent-Generalship, and seek a seat in the House of Representatives, probably as successor to Mr. Fox for Rangitikei.— Post. The Otago Guardian lias been shown some samples of slate of excellent quality for roofing purposes —equal, in fact, to the best Welsh slates —said to have been obtained in Otago. The discoverer, of course, refuses to disclose the locality at present, merely stating that it is within six or seven miles of a railway. He says that he has been searching for it for 12 months, and that any quantity can be obtained without difficulty.
