PRELIMINARY NOTICE. Wednesday and Thursday, 3rd and 4th February, 1875. SALES AT THE ANNUAL RAM FAIR, To be held at Hastings under the auspices of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society. Mr. M. R. Miller Has received instructions to sell by auction, at the SHOW and RAM FAIR to be held as above, the following Choice Stock— THE Pure Short-horn, Rich Roan Bull Calf “LORD GWYNNE,” bred by A. A. Fantham, Esq., of Canterbury. Lord G vvynne is by Royal Gwynne, dam Lady Don (6) by Omar Pasha (5), g d Belle (3) by Prime Minister (13). Royal Gwynne was bred by Hugh Aylmer, Esq., of Norfolk, and selected by H. Dudding, Esq. He was got by Royal Broughton, a price Booth bull, by Mr. Booth’s bull Commander-in-Chief, allowed to be the best bull ever shown in England. RAMS. 20 Pure Lincoln Shearling Rams, bred by Joseph May, Esq., of Auckland. These Rams, for length of staple, lustre, and stamina., can hardly be surpassed, and are deservedly held in highest favor. 4 Shearling Pure Lincoln Rams, bred by Messrs. Sutton Bros., Southland. 4 Four-Tooth pure Lincoln Rams bred by Messrs. Sutton Bros., Southland. These breeders for years have commanded the highest rates, from the fact that their wool is highly prized, not only in the English, but also in the French and German markets. The fleece is long, dense, and level, while the sheep are of a strong, healthy constitution. “CHAMPION,” a 6-tooth Ram, also by the same breeders, winner of the Silver Cups at the Invercargill and Dunedin Shows. 2 Shearling Rams, bred by J. R. Kirkham, Esq., of Caiston, Lincolnshire, and imported per “ Calypso ” to Dunedin in tbe end of October. This flock has been renowned for the length, quality, and quantity of their wool for 150 years, and were considered at the Canterbury Shows the handsomest and most masculine sheep of their type ever imported to the colonies. COTSWOLD. 5 Ram Hoggetts, First Class 5 “ “ Second Class These Cotswolds are sample pens from J. D. Canning, Esq.’s well-known Oakbourne Flock. The complete satisfaction which Rams from this flock has given to buyers, and the marked success of their crosses on the “downs,” for weight of wool and constitution, render comment here almost unnecessary. This breeder’s “ Champion ” of the Longwools of a previous Show seems to beget like all over, as from the breech to the neck the wool is wonderfully level, and of a clear, strong fibre. MERINO. 50 Ram Hoggetts, from pure Rambouellot sires, bred by Messrs. Nairn Bros., Pourercre. These Rams are heavily clothed with deep-combing, strongfibred wool, and possess a vigorous constitution. 60 Four, Six, and Eight-Tooth Merino Rams, bred by J. Harding, Esq., Mount Vernon. These sheep are wellwoolled and of good constitution. 32 Six-tooth Rams, bred by the Hon. Matthew Holmes. These sheep are profitably woolled and notably wellframed. 25 Six-Tooth American Merino Rams bred by G. L. Size, Esq., Otago. No breed of Merino imported to the colonies has surpassed these in weight and quality of wool. A lot of 30 Iloggetts of same lambing clipped at the Dunedin Show from 131 b to 241b5., averaging over 181bs. EWES. 14 Pure Lincoln Ewes, 4-tooth, bred by Mr. Rutledge, of Warrnambool, Victoria. These Ewes were considered the best lot that had been imported to our province at the last Show, and are now only sold by the new purchaser, Mr. Knight, on account of his leaving Havelock for his new country at Wairoa. With the above Ewes, there are One RAM LAMB and Two EWE LAMBS, got by a ram of Mr. King’s, a highlyesteemed Lincolnshire breeder. There will be several other lots of pure-bred Provincial Sheep, particulars of which will appear in a future issue. also, Exhibited Cows, amongst these a few first-class competing Milch Cows.
