RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT
Gisborne, Thursday, January 21, 1875. [Before W. K. Nesbitt, Esq., R.M.] TAYLOR V. BUBSLAM. Defendant was charged by Alexander Brooke Taylor with having feloniously stolen a tether rope and strap. Alexander Brooke Taylor, sworn states : I lost a strap and rope on the 10th January. The strap produced I can identify, but not the rope. I left a horse outside my house for a short-time on the evening of the 10th January, shortly after I found it at some distance without either strap or rope on it. Yesterday I saw the strap in the possession of a Maori woman. I gave information to the police. By Mr. Wilson : I recognise the strap from its general appearance. Matthew Hall, sworn states : I recognise the strap produced. I lent it to Mr. Taylor, about a fortnight ago with a horse. I can swear to the strap, but not the rope. Constable Joyce, sworn states : I was on duty in Gisborne, on the 20th inst. I arrested the prisoner by consent of Mr. Taylor for having in his possession a strap belonging to the prosecutor. I arrested him on Mr. Taylor requesting me to do so. By Mr. Wilson : The horse from which I took the collar was standing near to Mr. Hall’s fence. A woman’s saddle was on the horse. Burslam told me the strap w’as his, and that he got it from a Ngatiporou native. The Bench considered the evidence insufficient to convict, and dismissed the ease. ANTHONY BORKEN, A rnn-a-way sailor from the Queen Bee was arrested on Wednesday night last, at King’s Saw- Mill, and remanded on warrant to Napier gaol.
