COLONIAL ITEMS.
AUCKLAND. January 8. The Omahau, from New Caledonia, reports that two Communists escaped in a boat of the barque Island City. They were pursued by the pilot boat, but got free. They were last seen by a passing vessel steering for Norfolk Island. They are probably the same men who arrived in Australia recently. A requisition is being circulated asking Sir George Grey to stand for City West. Messrs. Millett and White carried Miss Porch’s body to the Waikato Heads from the place where it was left by the men who recovered it. Her brother and Constable Limmer pursued them, and were left exposed to the weather, and without covering in an open boat. The men at first refused to give up the body, saying they wanted to give it. a decent burial. The body was brought to Tuakau. At the inquest held a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. The body was buried on Saturday evening. The men are likely . to get into trouble through this singular interference. GRAHAMKTOWN. January 8. D. M. Mclntyre, an old Otago miner, who has been prospecting at Ohirwmuri, reports having found alluvial gold, with fair prospects, but not rich, Mclntyre and a party where turned off by the native police, acting under orders from Mr. James Mackay. WELLINGTON. January 8. The ball to the Governor took place at the Theatre last night, and was a remarkable success, about -100 were present. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and proposed the health of the guest of the evening. The Governor replied briefly ; he said before he left these shores he hoped to be able to lay claim to a greater share of t hat esteem which they evinced for him at the present time. After having seen many British colonies, he knew of none which holds out more promise of a permanent and happy future than New Zealand.
A number of merchants met at the Empire Hotel this morning, and presented Captain Wheeler of the Taranaki, with a purse of £lOO as a token of their appreciation of him.
