A bitter quarrel has arisen between the Hon. Mr. Fox and Mr. Halcombe, his nephew by marriage, relating to the establishment of a hotel at the Fielding n£w settlement of emmigrants and colonists in the corporation of the Manawatu district. Mr. Fox had determined that no hotel should be established in the district, as it was intended that it should be a teetotal Utopia, and influenced Mr. Halcombe, as manager for the corporation, to help him. Sly grog selling resulted, and ultimately Halcombe deserted Fox, and sided with the people who were wanting a hotel established. The hotel is now being built, and Mr. Fox has been holding public meetings, haranguing the settlers against the impropriety of opening the hotel, and denouncing Halcombe as having practically allowed sly grog selling in order to strengthen the ease of those wanting a hotel. He accuses Mr. Halcombe of treachery and bad faith. The hotel will bo established as it is generally wanted, but it is thought Mr. Halcombe will suffer for opposing Fox. Mr. Halcombe is a sort of dependant of Fox, and owes his present billet to his influence.— Auckland Echo.
