POVERTY BAY “TURF CLUB MEETING,” 1875.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,: —Startling and novel feature in the Poverty Bay racing programme I “ Hack Post and Rail Race!” For the sake of all sporting gentlemen, do use your influence on our behalf, as we consider ourselves greatly “ exercised ” to be thus pitted against each other. We do not object to be used for our legitimate purpose of fencing, neither do we object to be sat upon, but, to be taken out of the bush (where we can be “ trained ” to some advantage) and brought on to a race-course to be hacked (beyond our usual hacking and shaping) and jumped upon, is a “ course ” we do most strongly object to, and protest against; therefore, do prevail upon the Committee, not to eom»«7 and disgrace themselves, by racing us ; we “ go ” very well together for many a mile as you have seen. Now if they persist in sending us to the “ post,” we will join issue with our confreres and stick there, and all the driving, punching, and straining won’t compel us to start, as we will be “ backed ” by the on-lookers (by whom we don’t tp, be “ sat upon”) who will assist with “hands down ” as winners in the General Railing.
