LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
SlB, —In this morning's issue of the Jerald I was surprised to find that the Secretary of the Turanga Library had received £5O balance of Library Fund. Of this lam quite ignorant, not. having received any official reply to my last application for the above amount. — I am, &c., T. M. Bryant, Secretary. Monday, Dec. 28, 1874. [advertisement.] Sir, —I beg to enclose a copy of a letter handed to me by Mr. Poynter; and in addition would beg to remark that, in consequence of conversations that took place between myself and Capt. Porter, I was induced to believe that the natives had all through been acting under advice given by him, and which from his explanation, I now believe not to have been the cast. —I am, &c., A. F. Hardy. Gisborne, Dec. 24, 1874.
Sib, —Having been requested by Mr. Hardy and yourself to enquire into the circumstances which gave rise to a let ter from Mr. Hardy in the local papers of the sth and 7lh instant, I beg to inform you that I am of opinion that the natives could not have been acting under your advice in resisting the survey of the Takopa Block, as you had been absent from the district and did not become aware of the facts of the case until after the last act of forcible opposition on the 23rd November. The advice you then gave to the natives to protest against the survey, which was on the 28th November, whether judicious or the reverse, was concurred in by the Resident Magistrate. At the same time it appears that nt the time the letter was written by Mr. Hardy he was justified in forming the opinion he expressed at your action in the matter, for in discussing it with him and two others you so expressad yourself as to lead them all to believe that your advice to the natives had been not only to protest against the survey but to forcibly oppose it from the beginning. Whereas you were referring to your recommendation on the 28th November to forward a protest to the District Officer.—l am, &c., Jas. B. Poynteb. Captain Porter, Gisborne.
