Strawberries.—On Saturday last we were favored with a second edition of some very fine Strawberries from Mr. Weston’s nursery at Ormond. They are the celebrated ’■ Duke of Edinburgh ” variety, and for size and flavor are certainly not surpassed by any in the Bay. Local Talent.-—We have received from the author, a complimentary copy of a Christmas Carol, written and set to music by the Rev. George Warrell Russell now resident in Gisborne. The Carol is arranged for S. A.T.B. voices, and, viewed either as a literary or musical composition, does the Rev. gentleman great credit. One of the things to be regret-led, is, that, where we have proofs of such undoubted talent, we should be debarred, by circumstances, from a fuller enjoyment of it. Printed copies of the Carol can be obtained at Mr. Adams’ at the extremely low price of 2s 64. ■*
Hawke’s Hay Files.—By the mails which arrived on Saturday and Sunday last by the Opotiki and Pretty Jane frorh Napier, we have to acknowledge the receipt of buck numbers of the Telegraph and 11. E. Times down to the 11th of December, none of which were of the slightest use to us, as the news they contained had been anticipated. We also acknowledge,"with special thanks, one copy of the 11. E. Herald of the 18th. If our files to these papers come to hand so loosely as theirs do to us, there must be something wrong somewhere. Waerbng a-a-hika Sports.—We have been requested to announce that the sports as originally advertized will take place at Waere-nga-a-hika on Boxing Day. The alt ration of the date to New Year’s day, as it appeared in the Herald of Monday last, was made under the impression that the paddocks would not be ready for the purpose. It is now ascertained that this objection has been removed, and the original arrangement will not be disturbed. Education.—We are not responsible for the Education Advertisements inline morning’s issue being 15 days on the road : they reached us by way of Napier on Saturday last, the order for their issue being dated 4- ii of December.
