ROAD BOARD.

The Board met on Monday last. All the members were present. The following letters were received:—

From Mr. T. W. P. Smith relative to the state of the road to his section at Ormond. (Tenders for the work are already accepted.) From Captain Gudgeon, stating that as it would be highly irregular to keep powder in any place not under the immediate guard of armed men, the magazine cannot be removed to the suburbs.

From the Provincial Secretary notifying that under the circnmstauees the Government will not insist upon a compliance with the letter of the provision in the Highway’s Act, 1874, relative to the employment of an Engineer. From the Superintendent relative to Road Board grant of £175. From Mr. Brophy, Immigration officer, stating that he had forwarded five immigrants to Gisborne.

From Mr. Bold, relative to map of roads required to be made in the district. From Captain Read notifying his willingness to secede to the terms proposed, viz., that the Board defray one third of the cost of an outlet drain from the Gladstone-road to the Waikanae creek.

From Captain Porter complaining of the damage done by horses w’andering the streets of the town.

From Provincial Secretary stating that certain recommendations made by the Harbor-master and Pilot are under the consideration of the Government; also stating that the Superintendent will pro. claim the East Coast District Sheep Act, 1874 in force, unless objections be made to the contrary. J. Brown’s application to extend the time for completing the outlet drain from Middle-road to the Taruwheru river, to the 31st March 1875 was acceded to.

Mr. Daly waited on the Board relative to Stanley-road. The matter was referred to the Overseer.

The Secretary was instructed to make out Mr. King’s account for punt hire, and to debit him with £4 da.; ages.

It was resolved that Mr. Hume, the Overseer, should have an advance of £25 per month to meet contingencies. The Overseer was instructed to examine the Pipiwaka-road, and to remove obstructions ; also to remove stumps on the road from Waerenga-a-hika to the big gate at Tahoka.

Captain Kennedy was authorised to procure a Flagstaff for the use of the port, and charge the same to the Board. The Overseer was instructed to gravel the road leading to the wharf, and to have the bridge leading to the Waikanae creek repaired.
