IN MEMORIAM.
Peace be to thy soul! Sweet bud of early Promise, and of later Hope, Farewell 1 “ Ab a tale that is told ” hath thy young tifo Been la’eii by Him that gave it. But yesterday we saw thee, all innocence
abounding, Gladdening our household ; nnd to-dny We chant sad Kequicms o’er thy youthful birr; All that is mortal of thee, we have given lack To mother earth, who claimed That portion us her own. Peace Id thy spirit be! Thou art early placed, our son, Beyond t he pale and scope of future tribulfit ion To be alone with God ; whilst we remain behind “ To labor and to wait,” till comes the crack of
doom, When lhe “ last syllable of recorded time ” Shall note our mission ended. “ We mourn with grief opprest,” the loss of thee We lov’d in life ; but that loss is ours— Not yours : thou hast changed an earthly Fora Heavenly Crown, that will not fadeaway. Rest, thee, dear babe ! Thou art gone to the vast, by man untrodden, Regions of Eternity, There to meet the Grand Result, to whose
bourne We all are hastening onward ; And well it is, ’lis so. In humble resignation let us prny “ Father ; Thy will be done ! Into thy hands “Do we commend lhe spirit of our boy ; “ ’Twas Thou that gav’st him to us, ’tin Tliou “ That tuketh him away, from sin, “ And trouble, and the world’s cold Day “ And far more cheerless Night. “ W’e grieve our loss ; but st ill “ We thank Thee for Thy great Goodness : “ His is a present gain.'*
Fret not, Oh ! human mother’s heart, for thy dear boy Who now is numbered with lhe angels, Thronging the Throne of God. Mourn not, As those “ who have no hope,” for unto us all Our Saviour Lord did comfort bring, and say, “ Suffer the little children unto me to come.”
Grieve not, Fond parents of (he lowly laid, in accents deep, And sorrowing numbers oft, as if A bright career hud ended. *Tis only now begun. If the world’s pleasure be. Io him, and you, Foreshortened—and manhood’s prime fore-
closed On earth—so arc its troubles too. Had he lived, Ambition might have wrecked Beyond Salvation’s call, the soul That now is blest. Affection, and (he “ thousand shocks that flesh “ Is heir to,” might have overdrawn the heart Into a chaos of hopeless, disappointing love; and so, Have made the trials of the latter state, More weighty than the first.
Rather rejoice That into the Heavenly fold of God's elect Another lamb is gathered. “ He is not lost, but gone before.” From this, sweet consolation take Father and mother, brothers, sisters, all. And while yc upward send your daily prayer To the Giver of all Good, rest in Faith, And in the “ sure and certain hope ” Of joyful Resurrection. Look steadfastly beyond “ lhe life that now is ** To that “ which is to come,” where, In the Infinite Hereafter, ye shall Re-united be, “ for ever with lhe Lord.” H.E.W. Gisborne, Sunday, Nov. 15,1874.
