Church of England Service. —We are requested to state that the Rev. Mr. Murphy will hold Divine Service in the Court House, on next Sunday afternoon, at 3 o’clock.
The Rev. J. B. Russell desires us to announce that there will be no Service in the Music Hall, Gisborne, or at the Makauri, on Sunday next, in consequence of the opening of the Presbyterian Church ; but that Service will be held in the afternoon, at 3 o’clock in the Music Hall. Road Board Assessment. —We would remind Ratepayers that the Road Board will hear and determine objections to the Assessment Roll for the current year, on Saturday next. Objectors will have no other opportunity, if they let this one pass. Gisbobnb Dramatic Club.—We are glad to learn that this Club have again formed, and are to commence active practice at once. Some favorite pieces are in course of preparation, and a performance is promised in about a fortnight’s time. Native Lands’ Court.—A sitting of the Native Lands’ Court will be held this morning in the Court House Buildings, at 11 o’clock, to hear and adjudicate on certain claims to land enumerated in the advertized schedule to be found in another column. His Honor Judge Rogan will preside. Billiabd Match.—A private scratch match will be played this evening on the Masonic table, at 8 o’clock, between Mr. Connor, the marker, and Mr. J. Nash. The game will be~2oo up, and is to decide some little difference of opinion as to the relative merits of the players—[advt.] Parish Meeting.—The Rev. Mr. Murphy requests us to intimate that the notice which appeared on the Court House door on Monday last, convening a meeting of parishioners to proceed to the election of office bearers, &c., Ims been withdrawn for the present, such notice not being in accordance with the statutes of the General Synod, relative to the formation of new parishes.
New Hotel.—Mr. Thomas Fox’s new Hotel and Store at Waipiro are now open for public accommodation, both of which we learn from travellers bet ween the East Cape and Gisborne are a great convenience. The Hotel is spoken of as being something very superior ; and we have no doubt the proprietor will find his speculation a success.'
Resident Magistrate’s Court.—On Friday last there were no eases before the Resident Magistrate, at Gisborne ; such being the case, Dr. Nesbitt did not take bis accustomed seat on the Bench, had he done so, it is possible the customary “ white kids ” would have been presented to him by the Bar in acknowledgment of the event.
Opotiki Challenge.—One of the causes which have led to so much unpleasant misunderstanding between the Poverty Bay and Bay of Plenty Mounted Volunteers, has just issued from the Dead Letter Office. Just 12 months since Captain Hardy addressed a letter to “ Mr. Dctte, Secretary to the Bay of Plenty Cavalry Volunteers, Tauranga,” slating that his Troop were willing to fire on certain stipulated conditions for the sum of £5O. That letter has now been returned with “ Not known ; try Turanga, Gisborne ” noted on it. Something, or somebody, is evidently at fault. Billiard Tournament. —The excitement which has prerailed in our Billiard Salons during the past fortnight, was brought to a close on Saturday night last, when the prizes were awarded to Messrs J. Nash, J. Drummond, and R. Cooper, respectively. These consisted of a .-ilver watch, an omolu clock, with glass shade, and a gold scarf pin, all very handsome trophies. This contest has been the means of several impromptu amateur matches being played between competitors desirous of airing their skill.
Presbyterian Church and Soiree.—lt is fortunate that circumstances rendered it necessary to postpone the opening of the Presbyterian Church from Sunday last to the 25th inst., for a more inauspicious day could hardly have been chosen. The Services, as announced elsewhere, (will (D.V.) be conducted next Sunday, in the morning by the Rev. Mr. Bruce of Auckland, and the evening by the Rev. Mr. Sidey of Napier, bol h of which Rev. gentlemen will arrive during the week. The Soiree will take place in the Music Hall on the following Monday evening, when, doubtless, the occasion will draw together a large audience.
