At the cattle sale at the Hutt, cows fetched £5 10s each; yearlings and two-year-olds, £3 10s; hacks ranged between £7 and £lO. Mr. O’Shea quotes flour at from £l2 15s to £l3 2s 6d ; pollard, £8 10s ; bran, Is 3d; sharps, £7 10s to £8 ; potatoes, £7 10s to £8 10s ; grass seed, rye, £7 ; clover, Is 2d to Is 3d ; oats, 5s to 5s 4d ; wheat, chick. 4s to 4s 6d ; oatmeal, 23s to 24s ; hams, Is; bacon, lOd ; cheese, 8d to 9d. Christchurch, October 7. The cargo of the Derwent, consisting of potatoes, imported by Messrs. Cunningham and Co., from Australia for seed purposes, sold at auction at an average of £9 per ton. Private advices intimate an advance in potatoes, in consequence of the great demand in all the Australian markets.
Melbourne, September 30. Maize in good demand, 5s 4d, large sales ; new teas, recent arrivals show 4000 packages ; Californian salmon enquired after at Ils 6d. Hennessy’s case brandy 28s 9d ; considerable advance in deal sales; New Zealand white pine, 8s private. A telegram states little or no hops shipped; prices here have improved. The markets are quiet. Wheat is firm at 6s for prime samples, but very little is offering. The run upon hops Continues; Kents have sold at Is lOd. Brandies are slightly improved in price. Considerable sales of new teas continue to be made. The local value of the wool export last year from Melbourne was over five and a half million sterling.
