CORRESPONDENCE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I believe the modesty of the Poverty Bay District Highway Board hides from its constituents the very considerable saving they purpose making in the funds of the district during their term. But it would be wrong to let the fact go past, that they purpose doing away with the Engineer and Clerk, and substituting an intelligent workman, who also will collect the ratesand as is done in many other districts, one of the Board will do the small amount of Clerking required. Now this proceeding (as shown in the Road Board advertisement), should stop the mouths of those grumblers who, with a show of reason, say that just such an arrangement would hare sufficed all along as no Engineering difficulties exist in the district, and the plans and specificationsfor bridges, culverts &c.,arestereotyped. Well, sir, that is the first change for the better; I hope soon to hear more of such; and I am the more pleased as our rising little community will have the benefit of the late officer’s undisturbed attention to his many new undertakings.—Yours, &c., Bamboozlb. [We fancy our correspondent is in the sarcastic vein ; although we fail to see where the saving exists. Whatever additional salary has to be paid to the “Collector and Overseer ” will be deducted from the salary at present paid to the Secretary and Engineer. For our own part, we do not think there is much chance of working so large a district at a more economical rate than at present. — Ed. S. and P.A.]
