Mb. G. Saunders announces that he has succeeded to the Bakery business at Ormond hitherto carried'on by Mr Duncan.
Mb. F. Wells, notifies that he has commenced business at Ormond as a Builder and Architect. Acclimatization Agency.—We learn that Mr R. M. Skeet has been appointed local agent in Gisborne for the Auckland Acclimatization Society. Public Valuatob.—At a meeting of the Gisborne Permanent Land Building and Mutual Investment Society on Monday evening last, Mr R. M. Skeet was appointed Surveyor and Valuator to the Society. Billiard Tournament.—Competitors in the Billiard contest are informed that play has begun at the Argyll table ; and as the matches must be over by Saturday the 17th instant, it is essential that as many as can make it convenient should attend early.
Waikanab Bridge.—There is still some prospect of a bridge being built over the Waikanae stream. Dr Nesbitt has taken the matter in hand, and actively canvassing for subscriptions, a list of which lies at our office. About £36 have been subscribed so fur.
Divine Services.—The Rev. W. H.-ving-ham Root \yill (D.V.) conduct Divine Service next Sunday at Ormond in the morning and at Gisborne in the evening at the usual hours. The Rev. Mr Murphy will officiate at morning service at Gisborne—at which the Holy Communion will be administered ; and in the afternoon, at Matawhero, at 2.30.
Breach or Contract. —We have been informed that “the irate passenger ” to which wo recently alluded, in connection with the unpunStual arrival, and short stay of steamers, has, at last, turned up. A gentleman now staying in Gisborne waiting the arrival of the Rangatira, has determined to sue the N Z s.s. Company for his hotel expenses whilst detained in Napier for Some days on his trip to Poverty Bay. R.M.’s Court.—On Saturday last J. Sprout was fined 10s for being drunk in a public place. Judgment was given in favor of A. F. Hardy who claimed £3B 18s 6d from W. Benson for cash and goods supplied. On Monday Inst W. Benson was bound over on information laid by A. F. Hardy in a sum of £5O to keep the peace for three months. Local Registry. — Mr R. M. . Skeet announces that his offices adjoiningthe Masonic Hotel are now open for the Registration and Transfer of properly. It is also Mr. Sheet’s intention to carry on his profession as a Surveyor, Land, Estate, and Commission agent, his practical knowledge of which should prove a lucrative undertaking, as well as bestowing a great boon on the community by the Registration of Deeds.
Ormond Garrick . Club.—The particulars of the performance fixed to come off at the Ormond Theatre on Wednesday evening next-, are announced this morning. The programme comprises u_Drama, Farce, and Interlude, Mr Clements sustaining the full weight of the latter himself. The female characters will, for the first time at this theatre, not be represented by men.
Testimonial.—We understand that a testimonial, in the shape of a purse of sovereigns, is to be made shortly to Mr William Gay, the excellent organist who htiq so obligingly presided at the harmonium, not. only at the usual church services, of all denominations, but on every occasion when musical nractiees and public entertainments required bis services. Local Industry.—Yesterday we noticed a light, four-wheel spring trap, drawn by two horses, in town, recently turned out of Mr. J. Dick’s Factory, in Gisborne, for Mr Hird’s Lemonade business. It is put on the roads in as good order, and workmanship as any of the kind wo have over seen, and at a price not outside that of, any other Province. It is a credit to the builder—Mr Ferrop—and speaks well for the local industry of the township. Sporting. —■ A wager, possessing some points of interest, and considerable in amount, was made at the Argyll Hotel the other evening. Mr DeMoidroy had sold to Mr Thelwall a lot of 40 fine sheep, when differences of opinion were started as to theiraverage weight. Mr Kelly backed his judgment against Mr DeMoidray’s with a substantial wager of £lO that a certain sheep, picked from the number, would not weight to 901bs clean; it netted 87ibs, thus landing a £lO note in Mr Kelly’s pocket, as also proving both winner and loser not bad judges. “Success and justice to the sheep,” was toasted in champagne,afterwards. The weight, speaks well for Air DeMoidrey’s flock.
Harbor Master and Pilot. — Captain Kennedy, who arrived in Poverty Bay on Saturday last, has received his appointment as Harbour Master and Pilot at the Port of Poverty Bay, and has entered upon his duties as such.
