Simpson will also hold divine service at Gisborne, at 9 a m. Assessment List. —The Assessment list, of the Poverty Bay Highway District for the current year, is announced for inspection at the Court House, at Gisborne, from Thursday next, the 24th inst.., to Saturday, the 24th of October, on which day the Board will hear and determine objections. Volunteer Land Act. — Mr. Tble, the Waste Lands Commissioner, gives notice in another column that all claims for Remission Certificates under the Volunteers’ Land Act, 1865, and all claim for rhe exercise of scrip issued under the said Act, will be barred unless made on bifore the Ist of October next.

Inspector of Weights and Measures. —Mr. Reilly is now on an official visit to this district, for the purpose of adjusting and stamping weights and measures. No time should be lost in complying with the intimation contained in the Inspector’s advertisement, ns ail weights and measures found unstamped will be seized, and that means something unpleasant. New Blood.—Mr Espie, who returned from Auckland by the Pretty Jane on Wednesday last, brought-an addition of sire and dam blood to the draught, stock of the district. The horse “Auckland,” whose advertisement appears in another column, is a well known Clydesdale, and has taken several prizes. The brood mares are also of a superior stamp, ami can be seen at Air Espie’s paddock, at Makaraka. Post Office Letter Boxes. —We believe it is not generally known that the Postmaster at. Gisborne is prepared to receive applications for private letter boxes. A set of 25 are now being erected, and will be opened for distribution on the Ist of October. A deposit, of 10s for the December quarter must accoming lessee at the Albion Hotel Billiard Room, has opened his list of subscribers for the coming contest. Forty members at. 10s each are required to “set the balls a rolling,” which will, we doubt not, be soon filled up. Prizes will be awarded to the three winners of tin* majorty of games, a feat.u e which, in itself, should be attractive, independent of the recreative pleasure attached to the game. Sub-Inspector Bennett. —The gain which pron otion has brought to this officer, is a loss to the district of Poverty Bay, in that the gallant gentleman is for the future to be posted at TeKapU with hid old comrade Major Richardson, whither he proceeded via Napier on Friday last by the Rangatira. On dit hath it. that Captain Bennet is to ret uni about Christmaslide for the purpose of leading in “ an assault of arms,” of a far more peaceful and inviting kind, than those to which he is daily accustomed. We wish him “ good luck ” in both “ arms.”
