PANORAMA.

The children attached to the Rev. Mr. Root’s Sunday School were entertained in the Court House on Wednesday evening last, when a Panorama of supposed scenes from the Arctic Regions was exhibited. The apparatus has been kindly sent to the school from Auckland, and it possessed many objects of interest and instruction to the young folk who mustered in large numbers. The descriptive part of the entertainment was taken in hand by Mr. Brooks —a gentleman temporarily acting as Manager in the Bank of New Zealand during the absence of Mr. Turner—and gave a lucid explanation of the various sketches depicted on the canvas. Not the least pleasing portion of the programme was the singing of the school children, under the superintendence of their pastor — Mr. Root—who deserves great credit for the efficiency of Ilia pupils. They sang four different pieces, with an evenness and precision as to time, which showed what intelligent attention they had given to the subject of vocal improvement.

We understand that some £6 nett will be added to school funds, and that a further supply of books for the use of the school will be ordered at once.

The Rev. Mr. Root having returned thanks to the adult portion of the audience for their patronage, the entertainment concluded by the children singing “ Shall we Gather at the River,” very nicely indeed.
