In compliance with an influential requisition, the Mayor has convened aApublic.. meeting to-night, to consider'Mr. Vogel’s resolutions. ■ GRAHAMSTOW-N. ’ An important public meeting, convened by the Mayor, in reply to the abblftion resolution, was held last night in the Town Hall, when the following resolutions were unanimously carried, and ordered to be transmitted to the Premier and local member: —l. That this meeting fully approves of the action taken by the Premier in respect to the abolition of provincialism in the North Island, and trusts that the Government will extend the same policy to the Middle Island...-2. That in the event of the Government being defeated on the resolution, and appealing to the country, this meeting hereby pledges itself to support the candidature of those only who are favorable to the abolition of provincialism and its attendant evils throughout the colony. WELLINGTON. August 14. A Gazette issued this afternoon announces the issue of letters of naturalisation to Gustav Ludwig Theodore Von der Heyde, merchant, Auckland, and M.H.R. for Waitemata.

The Southern papers complain of the want of work for the immigrants. The Otago Times remarks that it is a matter

for regret that large numbers of ablebodied men and women should be allowed to eat the bread of idleness in our immigration barracks.

August 17. Mr. Reynolds has decided to stay where he is and vote with the Government.

It is understood that, in the event of a dissolution, he will be called to the Upper House.

Mr. Stafford has telegraphed that he will support the resolutions. The Government talk of a majority of 10, but this is bounce. NEW PLYMOUTH. August 15. The abolition of the provinces is likely to be popular here, provided the land fund is spent in the district. DUNEDIN. August 20. A public meeting is to be held at Port Chalmers to-morrow, re Provincial abolition resolutions for the strengthening of Macandrew’s hands. The sale of unreclaimed sections in the Bay yesterday realised £18,600, the largest amount received for one day’s sale in the province. The Guardian reviews favorably Mr. Vogel’s resolutions. INVERCARGILL. August 20. In criticising Mr. Vogel’s proposals, the Southland Times says :— “ There is no good purpose to be served by the maintenance of provincial life under the conditions such as those which are likely to exist in the north provinces, and those who look with the hope to make New Zealand prosperous as a colony hail the proposal of their abolition as the dawn of a healthier state. The Southland News advocates the abolition of the whole of the provinces.
