Passengers —Miss Morton, Miss Hargrave, Mrs Hird, Messrs Hird, M'Pherson, Cooper, Beaver, Shirley, Harrison.
The Government p.s. Luna, Captain Fairchild, arrived from Auckland via the const, on Wednesday evening last. She landed the Government monument to deceased friendly natives of Maketu, at Tauranga, and called at Waiapu for the Hon. Mr Morgan. The Luna landed a small mail, and steamed for Wellington about 8 o’clock. z Wellington, August 6. Arrived—Reichstag, 98 days from Hamburg, with 350 immigrants ; all well. Lyttelton, August 6. One hundred pounds were subscribed for 4,-aptain Hart, of the Beautiful Star, both of whose legs were broken yesterday, by the ■napping of a hawser, while towing the ship Balachmyle. Port Chalmers, August 7. The s.s. Beautiful Star arrived at 2 a.m. this day. Captain Hart died when the steamer was five miles from the Heads. New Plymouth, August 7. The Court of Inquiry into the. late wrecks gave its decision yesterday. It attributed the accident to the Eliza Mary as having arisen owing to the mistaken estimation of the draught of the vessel, or that the channel of the river was not so deep as supposed. With regard tot-lie Paterson, the Court considered that she was too large a boat for the river. No one connected with the wrecks is accused ■of negligence. August 10. At Waitara a heavy fresh came down the river which, with n north-easterly gale on Sunday, parted the steamer Paterson in two, making her a complete wreck. All hopes of saving the wreck are now abandoned.
The steamship Great Britain has arrived in Hobson’s Bay, after a smart run of 53 days. Auckland, August 11.
The barque Aniodell arrived this morning in a disabled condition. Her bowsprit and foretopmast were carried away in a heavy
gale. The Arbitrators have awarded to Captain Casey, £1,625 salvage on the Miltiades. Arrived —Star of the South, from Fiji. The captain reports that it is rumored in Levuka, that a vessel (supposed to be the French frigate Arcona) is ashore at Wallace Island. The consignees of the Miltiades have signed a document, requesting the arbitrators to furnish the reason for the large award to the salvors. The award causes great astonishment ; the evidence showing that, when put on full steam ahead, the Lady Bowen could not haul the slack of the warp out of the water.
The Woodbine, from Newcastle, reports that intelligence was received from the Palmer diggings of extraordinary rich alluvial finds, acme hundred ounces of gold weekly. Napier, August 11. The s.s. Southern Cross steamed for Auck. land yesterday afternoon, with a cargo of 58 head of cattle and 338 sheep. The s.s. Star of the South, in charge of Captain W. Palmer, arrived in the roadstead early yesterday morning, from Auckland. She left for Wellington and Southern Ports last evening.
Nelson, August 11. Arrived—Ad a mante, 93 days from Plymouth, with 300 immigrants ; all well.
