August 8. A meeting of immigrants has been held here, with the object of petiti ning the Government that the remaining debt upon their promissiory notes may be remitted. Several speakers alleged that they were unable to obtain an interview with the Agent-General in London, though they tried repeatedly, and that they were led to believe the Government would not trouble them by recovering on the promissory notes, unless they acquired property. , AUCKLAND. August 8. A few bottles of grog in possession of the providore, and not enumerated in the list of stores, have been seized on board the Star of the South by the Customs authorities. Captain Farquhar is summoned to appear at the Police Court on Monday, when an investigation will take place. Captain Daldy, in a strong speech in the City Council, on the irregularity of the revenues of the various Provinces, and the inability of Auckland to provide proper means of government, although contributing a quarter of a million to the Customs revenue, moved —“ That the police protection of the citizens is insufficient to prevent crime, and that a telegram be sent to the Superintendent, requesting him to bring the matter under the notice of the General Government.” The motion was carried unanimously.
