The Standard AND PEOPLES ADVOCATE. (PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY AND SATURDAY.)

SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 1874.

*• We shnll sell to no man justice or right: \\ e shall deny to no man justice or right: We shall defer to no man justice or right.”

Amongst the many subjects that have been considered by the Government as essential to the prosperity of this district is that of the formation of the main lines of road. A deputation, at once numerous andinfluential—including Captain Bead and Mr. Hardy as representing the Highway Board—waited on the General Government just prior to the departure of the Rangatira from Wellington, for the purpose of discussing several matters of importance. Little had transpired beyond the fact that no unnecessary delay will be occasioned in carrying out, amongst others, the much needed work of road making. We understand that a tramway will be laid in the first instance, so as to facilitate the object in view. Several other matters of interest will be found amongst the Parliamentary intelligence in another column, not the least important of which is the Premier’s proposal to abolish the Provinces in the North Island.
