PORT OF POVERTY BAY. ARRIVALS. AUGUST. Nil. DEPARTURES. AUGUST. Nil. Tub Pretty Jane is overdue. She will enter the river and remain a tide before proceeding to Napier The Raugatira is hourly expected and will Btt*aiu for Napier and Wellington shortly after arrival. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received- telegraphic advices from London of the following arrivals :—W. E. Gladstone, from the Bluff; ships Salisbury and Ocean Mail, from Lyttelton. Sailed—Cartvale, for ■Wellington; Endymion and Duke of Edinburgh, for Lyttelton 5 Stirling Castle, for Auckland; Lennox Castle, for Otago. Loading—Star of India and Hourah, for Wellington ; Waitangi, for Auckland ; Dunfillan, for Otago ; Hindostan, for Canterbury. From the Napier Telegraph we learn that —“ The state of the bar at the inner haroor, Port Ahuriri, is at present most unsatisfactory. The channel is not only very shallow, but exceedingly tortuous, calling for the exercise of the greatest care in its navigation by the skilful pilot, Mr. Kracft, to whom much praise is due for the successful manner in which he brought the s.s. Southern Cross to the wharf, under the greatest difficulties. Every week, the need of an artificial harbor becomes more and more apparent, and the obstructions thrown in the way of this much required public work by the landowners, reflect little credit on them as public-spirited settlors, and will earn for them the reverse of thanks.
